OUR STORY

One handful is enough.

plasticompACT! began while travelling as a family. Wherever we went, we saw plastic around us. Occasionally we picked up some — a bottle on a beach, a wrapper in a park, a handful on the way somewhere — and tried to leave the place a little better than we found it. What started as a small action became a family tradition. And the more we did it, the more we noticed two things: plastic is everywhere — but it is also a resource. The real question became: why isn't picking it up just as normal as dropping it? We realised that we do not have a care problem. We have an incentive problem. What we reward is what we repeat. That became plasticompACT!: turning cleanup into an everyday micro action that anyone, anywhere can do — simple enough to start with one handful, rewarding enough to repeat. Connecting local businesses and the community around making our places better. One handful at a time. Because if one handful becomes a habit, cities change.

How it works

1. What is plasticompACT!?

plasticompACT! turns plastic cleanup into a small repeatable action: Pick. Drop. Earn.

2. What is PICK.IT?

PICK.IT is the action app behind plasticompACT!. It documents a cleanup action, verifies it and turns it into a rewardable impact.

3. How does PICK.IT work?

Pick up a handful of plastic and take a first photo. Later, dispose of it properly and take a second photo. Once the action is verified, you earn 1 plastico.

4. Why only one handful?

Because the action should be small enough to start and easy enough to repeat. One handful is enough.

5. What counts as a cleanup action?

Plastic litter picked up from a public or shared environment and later put into the proper local waste stream. Household waste or staged rubbish does not qualify.

6. Where does the trash go?

Into the existing local waste-management system. PICK.IT helps bring litter into established disposal channels rather than creating a parallel waste system.

7. What role can municipalities play?

PICK.IT invites municipalities to combine forces with citizens and help close the last mile: bins, collection systems, public spaces, schools and local campaigns can all connect to the same cleanup effort.

8. Does one handful really matter?

The idea is repetition, not heroics. One small action repeated by many people can become a habit — and habits can change places.

9. What is a plastico?

A plastico is the reward unit earned for a verified cleanup action.

10. Where can I use my plasticos?

With participating rewarders. The model is global-local: rewards can come from businesses nearby or from partners across the wider plasticompACT! network.

11. What is a rewarder?

A rewarder is a business that rewards verified customer impact. Cafés, shops, hotels, restaurants, venues and other businesses can participate.

12. Does a rewarder handle the trash?

No. The litter goes into the normal waste-management system. Rewarders reward the verified action; they do not receive or process the waste.

13. Why would a business become a rewarder?

To reward customer impact, elevate its own footprint and become a visible plasticompACT! member through the free rewarder kit.

14. What is a Super Rewarder?

A Super Rewarder goes beyond the basic reward and offers stronger benefits, special rewards or additional participation in campaigns and challenges.

15. What is a Super Collector?

A Super Collector is someone whose repeated cleanup actions build a stronger participation record through streaks, challenges and repeated impact. PICK.IT does not replace the good deed — it elevates the benefit of a good deed already done.

16. What if there is no rewarder near me?

Your plastico does not have to be tied only to the place where you collected the litter. The reward system is designed to work across a wider global-local network.

Safety

17. Is picking up litter safe?

Safety comes first. Use gloves or a litter picker where appropriate. Do not touch sharp, medical, chemical or otherwise hazardous waste; leave dangerous material to the responsible local services.

Trust & verification

18. Why are two photos needed?

The first shows the litter being picked up. The second shows that it has later been disposed of properly. These are deliberately two different moments and may happen in different places.

19. How does PICK.IT prevent fraud?

Several verification layers can work together: the PICK and DROP images must correspond, the litter must have moved from the pickup context to the disposal context, the timing must be plausible, previously used litter must not simply be recycled through the system, and unusual reward activity can be audited.

20. Can I photograph rubbish from home?

No. PICK.IT is intended for litter removed from public or shared environments, not ordinary household waste.

21. Can the same trash be used again?

The verification logic is designed to detect repeated image patterns and previously seen litter. A verified item should not be reusable for another reward.

22. How does PICK.IT know that the litter actually moved?

The system can compare the PICK and DROP evidence: the same litter pattern should be recognizable, while the surrounding context must show that it has moved from the pickup environment into a proper disposal context within a plausible time interval.

23. Are rewarders checked too?

Yes. Verification should work on both sides. Collector actions can be checked through PICK/DROP rules, while unusual or implausible rewarder redemption patterns can be reviewed and audited.

Data & privacy

24. What happens to my data?

PICK.IT is designed local-first. Ordinary app information stays on the user's device and in the browser. Verification data needed for a PICK/DROP action may be processed temporarily and is deleted after 48 hours.

25. Does PICK.IT track where I go?

PICK.IT is not intended to continuously track users or build movement profiles. Any location information used for action verification should be limited to what is necessary for that verification.

26. Are there accounts, advertising trackers or analytics?

The project is designed without advertising tracking or profile-building analytics. The aim is to collect only the minimum information required to operate and verify the action.

27. When does plasticompACT! launch?

The pilot is planned for November 2026, ahead of COP31.

28. What is the School Award 2026?

The plasticompACT! School Award supports school-based plastic action worldwide. It opens 1 October 2026, includes a €500 school donation, and closes 31 December 2026.

29. Can schools, cities or events use plasticompACT!?

Yes. The same simple action can be used in schools, cities, events, beaches, tourism areas, hotels and neighborhoods.

30. Why does plasticompACT! exist?

Because caring is often not the problem. What we reward is what we repeat. plasticompACT! makes cleanup small enough to start, visible enough to recognize and rewarding enough to repeat.
